Immerse: Messiah - Week 14, Day 66

Purposeful Traditions

Do I write about Thanksgiving or Christmas? This time of year is great because topic choices are so easy! But this week’s blog is on the gospel of John – which doesn’t have a) a lot of thankfulness or b) a Christmas story! So… no easy topics here. In fact, the gospel of John presents a very difficult-to-grasp kind of Gospel. Don’t get me wrong – it’s the same gospel message as the rest, but rather than being a narrative of Jesus’ life, we get a work of writing which begs its reader to answer the question: Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God?

This week in Immerse, we’re not reading a Christmas story. In this first half of John’s gospel, we observe Jesus interacting with people who are having a hard time grasping who He really is. And as we read, we will see some accept Jesus and some reject Him as their savior. During the time you read this week, I’ll encourage you to jump into the story as if you are one of its characters. Interact with Jesus and answer that same question everyone must answer when they encounter Jesus: Do you recognize the authority Jesus has as the Son of God, and do you believe He has redeemed you from your sins?

Our faith community here at Englewood Christian Church has a long-lasting reputation of steady, secure and relentless faith and trust in the Lord. As we approach some long-awaited traditions during this season, let’s make sure we come back to those traditions with a purpose – to reaffirm our faith in Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah “who takes away the sins of the world” (pg. 400). Let’s remember Him this season, recognize how He has redeemed us from our sin to give us new life every single day. Give your habits, your traditions and your schedules a purpose; give them over to the Lord and remember to accept and include Him in everything. Interact with Him just as you do when you encounter Him in scripture and let Him change you as you grasp the reality of who He really is – the Son of God and your savior. I don’t know about you, but this truth still changes my life every single day. I hope it does to yours, too.
