Navigate the Unpredictable (Psalm 91)

Guest Author: Julie Colvin

I grew up in the Midwest. Tornado green skies with train whistle winds were familiar elements.

I can remember once when I was a little girl, I was visiting my grandparents. Out of nowhere the sirens began. That loud warning horn would stop anyone in their tracks.

I was scared.

We went down to the basement bathroom as we’ve always been taught (any lower level room with no windows), and we hunkered down. We covered ourselves with couch cushions and then we did the single most torturous thing to do during a tornado - we waited.

We could feel the house shake and knew the storm was close. Then all of a sudden it passed, and we were able to breathe again.

After looking on the news and seeing the track of the storm, we noticed something remarkable. The tornado touched ground, but when it came closer to the edge of town where we were, it lifted back up into the sky.

Storms are scary and incredibly unpredictable. Isn’t that how life is though?

We can be walking through life, gazing at the blue skies and then, BAM! The sirens begin, and you’re looking for shelter from the unfamiliar winds.

The storms are endless and the elements bizarre.

So, what do we do when the storms come?

When searching for concrete truth, this world has nothing solid to offer. The best and only place to grasp the reality of life, can be found within the pages of God’s Word.

Walking through Psalm 91 there are FOUR truths we can claim when it comes to navigating through life’s storms.

1. Rest in the shadows of the Almighty (Ps. 91:1)
When we hide in the Lord, we are trusting His power to protect us and lead us through the storm. He is the holy umbrella that covers us from the hard rains ahead.

2. He is a trustworthy refuge and fortress (Ps. 91:2)
I’m reminded of the old hymn, "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God."
“Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He”

3. His faithfulness is your shield and comfort (Ps. 91:4)
The Lord is ALWAYS faithful. He does not go back on His promises and His word can be trusted. This is especially comforting during times of uncertainty, because we can be certain the Lord will be faithful.

4. He will command his angels to guard you (Ps. 91:11)
God Almighty has an army of angels standing at attention waiting for their orders to protect those who are walking in his will. This type of resource is unmatched and causes the pitiful troops of Satan to tremble.

There is something of which we need to take note, though, in this Psalm. In verse 9 it says, “If you make the Most High your dwelling.”

If we desire all the blessings of his protection, then we must live every moment in his presence.
One of my favorite podcasters, Christy Nockles, puts it this way when it comes to facing the storms in the dwelling of God.

“He [God] is our basement bunker, when the winds of life billow through and devastate everything that we know.”

Take comfort that the Lord is faithful through every storm, and knows how to navigate the storms to come.
