Immerse: Poets - Week 8

Choose the Vegetables

Each weeknight our family has a fun little thing we do. Once we’ve all sat down and started eating, we ask Alexa to play Jeopardy on the Echo device which sits on our table. Every weeknight there are 6 new questions we work together to answer. We really get into it, especially when we get them all right, and there’s always fist bumps and high fives when one of us answers a particularly difficult question. For us, family meal times have always been really important, and these family games of Jeopardy help us always have something to talk about. As the kids have gotten older, and our lives a whole lot busier, the nights we’re all home at the same time have become fewer. Because of that, I cherish these nights even more.

In week 8, day 37, of Immerse: Poets we read this Proverb, “A bowl of vegetables with someone you love is better than steak with someone you hate.” The foods we eat at each meal can be anything from chicken nuggets to salmon, and everything in between. My kids are pretty good about eating what I serve, but there are always nights when someone isn’t happy with what’s put in front of them. But one thing we can all agree on is the food itself isn’t as important as the company. There will be a time in the not so distant future when my 3 kids will be on their own. The five plates at the table will slowly dwindle until there’s just two. My hope is that I make the most of these years, and do all I can to appreciate every meal until that day comes. Even when we’re eating vegetables from the pantry instead of the preferred cut of prime sirloin.
