Core 52 - Week 50 - Scripture
by Angela Hastings on August 18th, 2020
It was the summer of 1988. I had just turned 15 years old that late July and had already begun reading through the Florida Driver’s License Handbook. It was time for that traditional rite of passage for every fifteen year old – testing for your driver’s learner’s permit. So much freedom – driving behind the wheel, and yet so restrictive – having your mom or dad in the seat next to you pounding on...
Core 52 Chapter 46 - Mentoring
by Angela Hastings on August 12th, 2020
Paul.Barnabas.Timothy.Three distinct men. Three unique roles. Three specific needs.I don’t recall the first time I heard about the correlation with these three men and the model of discipleship they convey to us, but I have used it many times over the years in challenging others to find these people in their lives. Everyone needs a Paul, a Barnabas and a Timothy. Let me explain.Paul – teacher of...
Core 52 - Chapter 48 - Overwhelming Worry
by Angela Hastings on August 4th, 2020
This morning, on my way from my house to the church, I caught twelve red lights. Let me emphasize that again, TWELVE RED LIGHTS!! As you can imagine, the Lord and I had several conversations on that extended trip, most of them beginning with me pleading and whining, “Why Lord? Why can you not teach me patience some other way??”And yet, for every one of those stop lights, as I approached, whether i...
Core 52 - Chapter 49 - Humility
by Angela Hastings on July 28th, 2020
If you’ve ever visited a water park, you can easily picture the absolute joy they can bring. From a relaxing float down the lazy river, to the stomach dropping thrills of a water slide, there is nothing quite like it. When my kids were little we spent a lot of time in the splash pad. One of their absolute favorite things to do was to stand under the giant bucket that would slowly fill with water. ...
Core 52 Chapter 46 - Unity
by Angela Hastings on July 21st, 2020
This week’s theme passage led me to stroll down memory lane. During a few different stints in my student ministry years, I used the name “ACE Student Ministries,” to help give some identity to the youth group and cast some vision among the students and leaders. The theme verse for this was the same as the one focused on by Mark Moore in this week’s reading, Ephesians 4:4-6: “There is one body and ...
Core 52 - Chapter 45 - Grace
by Angela Hastings on July 14th, 2020
I love gifts. In fact, I don’t think I know anyone who doesn’t like gifts. There is a thoughtfulness behind the gift. In most cases, the gift giver has put much thought into what the receiver of the gift might want or most need. The one giving the gift has sometimes gone to great expense to acquire the gift they hope to give. Many times, a gift like this is wrapped beautifully to bring joy to the...
Core 52 Chapter 44 - The Resurrection
by Angela Hastings on July 7th, 2020
If one were to ask the very same question regarding the Christian faith, there might be some debate, as well. Some might lean towards Genesis and the creation of the world and God’s full display of his omnipotence. Others would say the birth of Jesus as the savior of the world, Messiah, Redeemer. Some might look at the life of Christ – His teachings, miracles and works – as the most pivotal and influential. And there would even be a few who would point directly to Calvary and the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross that provided the atonement for the sins of the world. What a great debate – no matter what happens, we all win because these are indeed, great truths and foundational principles of Christianity. In my opinion, though, I would respectfully disagree with all of them...
Core 52 Chapter 43: Knowing God's Will
by Angela Hastings on June 30th, 2020
Growing up in Florida, I have had many different experiences with our natural nemesis – Hurricanes. Every year from June through October it seems as if there is a renewal of an ongoing battle between the storms of the Atlantic and the east coast of Florida. Having spent most of that time living in the Northeast coastal area (from Daytona to Jacksonville), I seem to recall only a handful of storms...
Core 52 Chapter 43 - Radical Change
by Angela Hastings on June 23rd, 2020
As I write this, my wife has headed out of town for a quick getaway with some friends, leaving me behind to “hold down the fort.” As you can imagine, it will be complete anarchy and chaos in the Ramsey house for the next 24 hours. Meals? How many times can you have pizza in a row? Sleep? If the couch is good for naps, then it’s good for sleeping, too. Dogs? Someone did let them back inside, rig...
Core 52 Chapter 41 - Freedom
by Angela Hastings on June 16th, 2020
When we trust the training provided by God’s Word, exemplified by His Son and emblazoned on our hearts by His Spirit, we then begin to see who we really are.
Core 52 Chapter 40 - God's Solution to Racism
by Angela Hastings on June 9th, 2020
At the end of all this is a simple observation. Racism is a sin; a sin rooted deeply in the hearts of sinful man. God’s plan is for people of every nation to come together under the name of Christ and bring glory and honor to God on His throne. This cannot be done if anyone operates under the worldview of self-exaltation over those around them. That would be in direct contrast to the hopes and desires of our Savior and Lord Jesus. It will not be resolved by ourselves. We cannot put our hope in the hearts of man.
Core 52 Chapter 39 - Baptism
by Angela Hastings on June 2nd, 2020
Just a few weeks ago, I was able to witness a young girl commit her life to Christ and be baptized. It was an amazing sight that I will never grow weary of seeing, leading, participating in or simply watching from the audience. For a child or student, that moment is usually the culmination of many years of prayers, conversations, discussions, teachings and more between parents and their children. ...
Core 52 Chapter 38 - The Ascension
by Angela Hastings on May 27th, 2020
In 1995, Heather and I were blessed with the opportunity to visit the Holy Land. We attended with a group of students from Florida Christian College (now JUFL) and several other people from churches around the state. Ironically, Fred Smith was one of those who attended, and the trip was led by his younger brother, James Smith – known by most of us from the college as “Doc Smith.” (Needless to sa...
Core 52 Chapter 37 - Holy Spirit
by Angela Hastings on May 19th, 2020
Just over a year ago, the Marvel movie saga relating to the Avengers came to its climactic conclusion with Avengers: Endgame. This was a massive story arch that extended into well over 20 films during the past 10 years. Several of the main characters had their own independent movies to tell their backstory, and one of those in particular is my favorite. Captain America, played by Chris Evans, tel...
Core 52 Chapter 36 - Eternal Security
by Angela Hastings on May 12th, 2020
What has four legs and quacks?A paradox! (Thanks, I’ll be here all week. Don’t forget to tip your servers!)Beyond the complete corniness of that joke, the word paradox is almost best defined by using the word paradox. Here is what comes from dictionary.comParadox: noun. - a statement or proposition that seems self-contradictory or absurd but in reality expresses a possible truth. In this week’s r...
Core 52 Chapter 35 - Communion
by Angela Hastings on May 5th, 2020
Great Scott! In one of the most iconic movie lines from the 1980s, Doc Brown, played marvelously by Christopher Lloyd in the hit movie series Back to the Future, takes the words right out of my mouth when I think about the beautiful storytelling and Christ-centered community that comes about when believers gather around the table to share in communion.Ironically, the storyline from that same movi...
Core 52 - Chapter 34 - Worship
by Angela Hastings on April 28th, 2020
Sometimes we tend to make even the simplest things extremely complicated. Life shouldn’t be so hard. Getting a cup of coffee, for example. At one time, you could walk into a diner, sit down at the counter, wave your hand to get the attention of the waitress and say, “Cup of coffee, please.” Within 30 seconds you had a hot cup of coffee and the creamers and sugar packets were within 18 inches of...
Core 52 Chapter 33 - Love - John 3:16
by Angela Hastings on April 21st, 2020
Love.Love is a many splendored thing.Love lift us up where we belong. All you need is love.In the name of love. What’s love got to do with it?These are only a few of the avalanche of catchy musical phrases containing this powerful and mesmerizing word. I could go on and on in continuing this list, and so could you! Love has moved many people to do marvelous and amazing things. Love has helped peop...
Core 52 - Chapter 32 - The Incarnation - John 1:14
by Angela Hastings on April 14th, 2020
Have you ever gotten a little frustrated when you have tried to explain something to someone a few times and they just aren’t getting it? You know, you might have mentioned to your kids about how important it is not to leave their shoes in the middle of the floor or explain to your spouse the importance of the direction of the toilet paper on the roll. Or maybe you’ve tried to explain to a cowork...
CORE 52 Chapter 31 The Greatest Command
by Angela Hastings on April 7th, 2020
Last night, Monday, April 6, would have been the night of the championship game match up for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Commonly known as March Madness, it quickly became “March sadness,” as it and all other sporting events involving large gatherings of fans and crowds were quickly postponed. This was an annual event that brought many together in the practice of “filling out your brack...
Core 52 Chapter 30 - Leadership
by Angela Hastings on March 31st, 2020
Feet. I believe God gave them to us strictly out of necessity and design. Other than that, I could do without them. The repulsive smell of them. The atrocious “nook and cranny” gathering points between your toes. The borderline vulgarity of the thickness and discoloring (maybe because I’m older?!?!) of those wretched toenails. The rough and calloused heel from wearing flip flops for too many yea...
Core 52: Chapter 29 - Rest
by Angela Hastings on March 24th, 2020
Blog – Week 29: Rest – March 24, 2020Sunday was a big day in the history of Englewood CC! It was the first ever “virtual” worship service in our church’s history! What an exciting example of the faithfulness and tenacity of God’s people to overcome many obstacles and still worship God in and with their faith community. It was a true blessing to read comments, emails, messages, texts and more as ...
Core52 - Chapter 27 - The Gospel
by Angela Hastings on March 10th, 2020
There are three moments in my life that stand out firmly in my memory as when someone shared “good news” with me. The first was over a cell phone while I was walking down the sidewalk in front of ECC when my wife shared the good news that she was pregnant with our first son, Jared. The second time was when the voice of our daughter’s birthmother conveyed to us her desire for us to raise her child...
Core 52 - Chapter 26: Our Co-Mission
by Angela Hastings on March 2nd, 2020
As a baseball fan, one of the most beautiful things to see on a baseball diamond is a quickly and smoothly turned double play. The most common version of this play (2 outs achieved off of one ball hit in play) is a ground ball to the second baseman or shortstop, who then throws/flips the ball to the player covering second base who then, after tagging the base, throws quickly to first base before t...
Core 52 Chapter 25 - The Supernatural
by Angela Hastings on February 25th, 2020
I can hear it in my mind now, “Angels and Demons and Hell, Oh my! Angels and Demons and Hell, Oh my!” The soft chant of confusion, discontent and distraction that usually accompanies any discussion of the supernatural. This is usually followed by references to fictional TV shows, comic books or other works of fiction that easily flood our mind with what we or others think when it comes to such be...
Core 52 Chapter 24 - Election and Predestination
by Angela Hastings on February 18th, 2020
Turning the page in my CORE 52 book this week led me to slightly gasp as I read the title, “Election and Predestination.” There was a bit of excitement and yet, at the same time, a bit of nervousness. The topic of Election and Predestination has been a dividing point, or according to some, “a hill worth dying on,” for more than several centuries. It really came to a tumult in the 16th century wi...
Core 52 Chapter 23 - The Cross
by Angela Hastings on February 11th, 2020
The Walking Dead has been a hit TV show for several years running. It is set in a dystopian post-Apocalyptic world slowly being taken over by zombies. I know many people who gather together on a weekly basis for “watch parties,” so they can enjoy the show together. It has even spawned a second spin off show and has the full arsenal of accessories – action figures, trading cards, T-shirts, video...
Core 52 Chapter 22 - Justice Served
by Angela Hastings on February 4th, 2020
In the movie The Princess Bride, one of the film’s McGuffins is a phrase spoken by Inigo Montoya – a phrase by which the initial story is driven forward. Inigo is on a desperate journey to right the wrong of his father’s murder by a mysterious man with six fingers on his left hand. Inigo’s approach to righting this wrong is to hunt down the six-fingered man who killed his father and return to the ...
Core 52: Chapter 21 - Money
by Angela Hastings on January 28th, 2020
When I was a kid, I remember on occasion my grandfather, who lived up in New York, making his way to Florida for work and also making a little time to see his grandkids while he was here. I remember on one occasion when he took my cousins, Doug and Jennifer, and myself, out to dinner and then we went to an arcade to play some games. Now, remember the timeline I’m working on and maybe you can rel...
Core 52: Chapter 20 - You are...
by Pete Ramsey on January 21st, 2020
I remember in the mid 90s a new praise song I heard at camp. It was the really cool, yet simple song that was sung in an echo pattern (one group sings a line, the second group echoes the same thing), then a unison pattern (everyone singing the same thing together and a final portion of the song “in the round (two groups singing two different sets of lyrics at the same time, then ending in unison t...
CORE 52 - Chapter 19 - Just Beneath the Surface
by Pete Ramsey on January 13th, 2020
Just Beneath the SurfaceI remember a while back I was cleaning out my car and happened upon an insulated cup I had once used quite often. Apparently, I had left it in the car and it had somehow made its way to the trunk/storage area (I drive a MINI – that space in the back cannot really be considered “trunk” space) and something had covered it up. Well, fast forward to the time when I located it...
CORE 52 - Chapter 18: Play-dough and Purpose
by Chris Kellar on January 7th, 2020
Today is the first entry in the ECC Staff Blog page. The purpose of our blog is to further the connection between our church staff and the ECC faith community. We want to use this to share our thoughts, pass along teaching, engage in conversation, encourage accountability and foster deeper discipleship. For the time being, these weekly blogs will focus on our journey through CORE 52 by Mark Moor...
